And the spa, with its heated indoor pool, is a fantastic place to relax. And even among eco-hotels, it’s a model of sustainable virtue AWA is a certified B Corporation, independently assessed for its beneficial social and environmental effects.Ī restaurant serves an ever-changing menu of high-end contemporary fare sourced as locally as possible, accompanied by expertly chosen Chilean wines. With just sixteen units, it’s small, and feels exceedingly private, though the public spaces are lively and the staff eager to help. This is clearly a labor of love, with every detail carefully considered, right down to the diagonal orientation of the rooms and suites, which are positioned for privacy, views, and optimal sun exposure. It helps that the hotelier is himself an architect and designer, and lives on site. It’s a setting that doesn’t necessarily need an extraordinarily attractive luxury boutique hotel, but it’s got one anyway: Hotel AWA, five stories of concrete, glass, metal, and wood, a stunning example of Chile’s specific brand of warm, organic modernism. The jacuzzi was cold (36C) every day we were there (4) and even when we asked and the steam room/sauna was not ready to be used.Chile’s southern region is increasingly known as its Lake District, and not without reason - this one, Lake Llanquihue, is spectacular, and would be even without the white-capped peak of Osorno, the volcano, dominating the horizon. It would be convenient to have some travel books and maps of the area for those of us that have a car and do not need to buy a tour. Unless you buy tours, they do not have much information about the area. Breakfast was of good quality and abundant, and dinners, although expensive, attentive to detail. On the other hand the hotel replaced the water bottles in the room every day without charge. Any coffee or drink they offer as you are sitting in the lobby is charged. We had a bed and breakfast rate at this hotel, that is much more expensive than anything else in the area, and even the water they offered me when arriving was charged as an extra. The fireplaces in the public areas have the same problem, and this is only because there is no somebody continuously adjusting the vents, etc. I do not think the fireplaces are wrongly designed but they do require lots of attention as depending how the fire is doing one has to open the vents more or less but they insist on not letting the customer touch the fireplaces. At the time we were there you could not open windows because the room would get thousands (yes, thousands) of little bugs attracted by the light inside. The room gets smoky, and you will leave the hotel with all clothes in your luggage smoky. This is a very nice property, great design, all rooms and lobby with views of the lake and the Osorno volcano (when it is not raining and cloudy!) The rooms as well as the lobby and restaurant have fire places and they will lit them up for you but the fire places do not work well and give a lot of smoke.
